Abstract

With the boom in Unmanned aerial systems comes the challenge of having more aircraft in the national airspace as drones will have to share space with aircraft like the helicopter. With their diminutive size making it hard to detect on radar, they pose challenges for air traffic management (ATM). To solve this problem, PrecisionHawk, a drone systems company has designed an LATAS (Low Altitude Tracking and Avoidance System), a lightweight system that can be built into a drone\’s circuits. LATAS provides flight planning, tracking, and avoidance over 2G cellular networks.

NASA is also working on the problem in partnership with firms like Google and Amazon, as well as PrecisionHawk. The space agency\’s proposed UAS Traffic Management System (UTM) would let it both track drone traffic and send operators alerts about routing, weather and restricted airspace. Like LATAS, the traffic management system designed by NASA is likely to use cellular networks for communication, while drones onboard GPS will be used for tracking. The cloud-based system would be largely automatic and self-optimizing, which means humans would only need to intervene in the event of an emergency. (Gent, 2015).
The system would not only track drones with cell towers but use those towers to provide drones with data about their environment and the placement of other flyers. This would allow them to not only watch, but control the behavior of drones; NASA wants the system to be able to “geo-fence” areas like airports and political centers so drones simply cannot go there. They could decide which drones should take precedence in congested areas, or force drones to land during bad weather. Though it isn’t mentioned in the documents, this would likely also allow authorities to ground participating drones they believe to be involved in illegal activity. (Templeton, 2015).
With many companies developing UAVs for commercial purposes coupled with the development of Low Altitude Tracking and Avoidance System and UAS traffic management system, Errant drones can easily be geo-fenced, disabled, or turned off before they cause harm. This solves the many issues associated with using unmanned aerial systems and opens a limitless use of unmanned aerial systems
