Francis Schaeffer Paper: Case Studies
Although Francis Schaeffer passed away nearly 30 years ago, his text “Art
and the Bible” remains a powerful and relative piece of discussing
contemporary art in the Christian world.

Read the essay “Some Perspectives on Art” by Francis Schaeffer.
For this 10-12 page paper, students are to complete 3 individual case studies. Start by choosing 3 of Schaeffer’s 11 distinct perspectives on evaluating art from a Christian perspective (they are listed below.)
Schaeffer’s 11 Perspectives:
1. A work of art has value in itself.
2. Art forms add strength to the world view which shows through, no matter
what the world view is or whether the world view is true or false.
3. In all forms of writing, both poetry and prose, it makes a tremendous
difference whether there is a discontinuity with the normal definition of
words in normal syntax.
4. The fact that something is a work of art does not make it sacred.
5. What kind of judgement does one apply, then to a work of art?
– Technical Excellence
– Validity
– Intellectual Content
– The integration of content and vehicle
6. Art forms can be used for any type of message from pure fantasy to
detailed history.
7. Styles of art form change and there is nothing wrong with this.
8. There is no such thing as a godly style or an ungoldy style.
9. The Christian world view can be divided into what I call a major and a
minor theme.
10. Christian art is by no means always religious art, that is, art which deals
with religious themes.
Every artist has the problem of making an individual work of art and, as
well, building up a total body of work.

Once you have selected the 3 perspectives you would like to write about,
begin to research artists and works of art that illustrate each perspective.
Your chosen artists must be from the 20th or 21st centuries. These artists
DO NOT need to be “Christian artists.” Consider browsing the following
websites for inspiration.

What is a case study?
Each case study must include the following:

•An introduction to the Perspective being studied, including a direct quotation from the text. i.e “ A work of art has value in itself. ” This is where you will tell your reader WHY Schaeffer believed this perspective to be true. Use supporting evidence from both the text and outside sources. (You might want to research how other scholars and theologians have interpreted this perspective.)

•An introduction to the image used for the case study. Think of your reader as being someone who has never seen this image before. What would be important for them to understand about this artist/image?

• Use Panofksy’s intrinsic level to give your reader CONTEXT to the image. Why was the image created? What does it mean for the artist who created it? Include OUTSIDE RESEARCH to validate your claims.

• The image being discussed (captioned with the full image citation including: artists name, title of work, year created, medium and full web source.)

• An assessment of how this image is a good example of the Perspective being discussed. This is the culminating point
of your case study: the Aha! moment- don’t overlook it! Include supporting evidence from the text and any appropriate outside sources to support your position.

•A personal reflection on why you find this artwork powerful or thought-provoking. (Here is it appropriate for you to use 1st person narrative voice.)

• Each case study must include a minimum of 3 outside sources. ONE of these can be the Schaeffer text (per case study.) You may want to explore art journals, museum websites, or news sources for your other sources.

Formatting Guide

•Your paper should be formatted according to either MLA or APA standards.

•Images must be no smaller than 4 inches in size and MUST include a
caption with appropriate image citations.

•Your paper should include a strong introductory paragraph followed by the three case studies formatted with subtitles, and end with a strong a strong conclusion paragraph. In your conclusion consider overall how Schaeffer is a useful tool for looking at art from a Christian perspective.
• Your paper MUST include a WORK CITED/BIBLIOGRAPHY section with a minimum of 7 sources formatted appropriately. (One of these may be the Schaeffer text.) See the above style guides for instructions on citing your sources.

•Your paper MUST include IN-TEXT citations of all information (directly quoted or paraphrased) from outside sources. Use FOOTNOTES or ENDNOTES accordingly. This tells your reader where SPECIFICALLY the information in your paper is coming from.

•Your paper must NOT use 1st person narrative voice EXCEPT in the
personal reflection section of each case study.

•PROOFREAD your paper for grammar/formatting/spelling errors BEFORE
submitting! This is an upper division course and your writing should reflect
